For Employers / Accredited Sponsorship

Becoming an Accredited Sponsor

Businesses pursue Accredited Sponsorship to gain faster, more efficient processing of visas and nominations for skilled overseas workers.

Accredited sponsorship features

Accredited Sponsorship status is granted to Australian employers that are already approved Standard Business Sponsors and have a strong history of compliance with sponsorship obligations.

With access to priority processing, Accredited Sponsorship can give businesses a competitive edge in securing top talent, particularly in time-sensitive industries.

Only Australian businesses are eligible to upgrade to Accredited Sponsorship status.

Businesses must:

  • Be an approved Standard Business Sponsor
  • Demonstrate a history of compliance with immigration and workplace laws
  • Have a strong record of non-discriminatory recruitment practices.
  • Provide employment terms and conditions that meet or exceed Australian standards
  • Meet one of the six accreditation categories, which include:
    • Australian Trusted Traders
    • Low-volume users with a high percentage of Australian workers
    • High-volume users with a medium percentage of Australian workers
    • Businesses with a major investment in Australia
    • STEM start-up businesses receiving venture capital funding
    • Commonwealth, state and territory government agencies

The 482 Skills in Demand and 494 Regional Visas – the same programs offered under Standard Business Sponsorship.

Both visa programs provide pathways to Permanent Residence for employees.

  • Compliance: Sponsors must comply with immigration laws and maintain proper records
  • Fair Work: Must ensure sponsored workers receive equivalent pay and conditions as Australian workers
  • Monitoring: Subject to audits and checks by the Department of Home Affairs

  • Priority processing of 482 and 494 visas and nominations
  • Streamlined processing for certain low-risk applications
  • The option to use job postings on the sponsor’s website as an eligible advertising platform for labour market testing purposes
  • Enhanced trust and recognition with Home Affairs and skilled migrants
  • The ability to fill critical roles faster by reducing administrative delays and improving the ability to compete for global talent

Managing sponsorship obligations

Employers must continue to meet a range of ongoing obligations to remain compliant with immigration regulations and maintain sponsorship privileges.

This is crucial and includes notifying Home Affairs of changes to business or employment circumstances, such as insolvency, company restructuring and if a sponsored employee ceases employment.

Sponsors must ensure visa holders work only in their nominated occupation and receive employment conditions equivalent to Australian workers, including salary benchmarks and written contracts. Discriminatory recruitment practices based on visa status is prohibited.

This requires employers to retain records of employment conditions, visa costs, and sponsorship compliance activities to provide upon request by the Department. Sponsors are required to cover costs related to sponsorship, recruitment, and return travel.

Non-compliance can lead to suspension or cancellation of sponsorship, fines or being barred from sponsoring future visa holders. Home Affairs monitors obligations, including through site visits and monitoring audits from time to time.
